The box is available in four sizes: Little Birdie (great for Lovebirds, Parrotlets, Cockatiels, Parakeets, Green Cheek Conure sized), Middle Birdie (great for Quakers, Conures, Senegals, Pionus, Timneh Greys, Caiques, some Mini Macaws & some small cockatoos), Big Birdie (Amazons, Cockatoos, Eclectus, and Congo African Grey sizes), and Jumbo Birdie (large Amazons, Macaws, Moluccan Cockatoos). The monthly subscription starts at $24.95 for the Little Birdie to $44.95 for the Jumbo Birdie, with significant discounts for longer subscriptions. Knowing that parrots have a long life ahead of them, and that they will destroy everything around them (including couches, books, important papers, walls), the longer subscription is definitely a must! Also, for each Squawk Box ordered, a percentage goes to parrot rescues. Not only do you provide fun new treats to your own bird, but you help other parrots as well!
This review is for the Little Birdie. My assistant reviewer is Kiwi the lovebird. She knows this is her box, and she’ll annoy me until I let her get in!
Everything in the box, including all the blue paper squiggles. The bird is not included, you need to provide your own. Oh, and the box is also safe to destroy.
There is no information on the content of the box, but you get a nice DIY Parrot Treat, a Did You Know about the name “Psittacines”, and the Rescue of the Month. For May, part of the money from the sale of each Squawk Box goes to Birdline Canada!
Kiwi is always happy once I finally open the box. And she found a bell. Of course she did.
Lattice Ball, no bell! Kiwi likes to spend her days running at things on the floor of my office, when she’s not busy throwing things on the floor (or destroying my keyboard). This toy is perfect as it’s light enough she can easily lift it and throw it back on the floor. Or play drums (she holds it in her beak and hit the floor while still holding it.)
Planet Pleasures bird toy. I really don’t know the name of this toy, but it’s surprisingly a winner for Kiwi! She used to not care one bit about these toys, but as she gets older, she likes to have quiet toy that she can happily preen when she’s in her cage. She finds them soothing and calming. I had never try them before getting a Squawk Box and I’m so happy to see Kiwi enjoying them (and not just bells!) The spirals are made with straw and there’s a bit of palm leaves and coconut as well. The coconut is great to keep her beak sharp!
Roasted Chickpeas treats by World’s Best. As usual, she doesn’t really know how to react with treats. But she’s getting used to having them mixed with her millet (her favorite treat ever!) Not being afraid of new food is a first step!
And she got two more hanging toys, one with bells!
Bonka Bird Toys – Coiled Shoe Lace with bells. First toy Kiwi saw in the box. She had her beak inside the bell before I could see everything that was in the box. The coiled bounced a bit, so it gives a bit of a balancing challenge to your bird while it’s hanging in their cage!
Super Bird Creations – Flower Power. Cute colorful toy full of plastic beads to challenge a strong beak! I like that the links all slightly open so there’s less chance for a random nail to get caught in it.
Once again, this box was awesome for Kiwi. She liked everything, and she’s not even afraid of the treats anymore! Her favorites are the bells (of course) but also the Planet Pleasures soothing toy.
Kiwi and I love Squawk Box as it is great to discover new toys, and maybe new favorites. I’m happy to say that having new toys every month got Kiwi even more curious about new things, and less stressed out when something different happens. And seeing that Kiwi recognizes the box every month makes me think that she really enjoys getting new toys to love or hate!
I’m impressed by the variety of toys available out there as Kiwi has been subscribed to Squawk Box for a while now and she only received the same toy once or twice! It’s fun to get a box of new toys and treats to discover, instead of spending countless hours at the pet store in front of a very limited selection to end up buying the same toy over and over again! And sometimes, your bird will surprise you by loving a toy or treat you were sure it would hate!
