February marks the first month that the regular GlobeIn box doesn’t contain an item from the Benefit Basket! GlobeIn Artisan Gift Box is a monthly subscription box full of artisan goods from producers all over the world. GlobeIn sources its products exclusively from non-profits, artisan collectives and other organizations that ensure a fair wage is paid to the artisans and farmers.
The theme for February was RISE & SHINE.
For some, morning is a lot like…bumper bowling. For others, it’s a cottony cave crawled through toward coffee. Whatever the case, when we offer ourselves that precious and occasional gift of not rushing, we discover that the wash of sleep has left us clean, soft, and receptive to simple, sensual AM pleasures. Like that ray of sunlight fanned out across the kitchen floor. Like each of the items in this month’s kit…
The information booklet comes with a curator’s letter detailing how you might use each item to wake up and greet the day.
The booklet contains the story of each artisan featured in the box.
Everything inside is usually contained inside a handwoven palm leaf basket, but one of the items was too large – and this is the first month I can remember that the box didn’t roughly approximate a cube.
You got us GlobeIn. While all previous months have included the item from the Benefit Basket (which they spoiled), this month didn’t.
GlobeIn Signature Palm Leaf Basket from Oaxaca, Mexico ($12) After a brief flirtation with no lid, GlobeIn is squarely in the lid camp. They’re very responsive to subscribers’ desires!
Matr Boomie Block Print Trivet from India ($7.20) Printed with a hand-carved wooden block by the Matr Boomie collective. Matr Boomie helps create economic opportunities for women and helps develop solar power, education, and health care initiatives in the poorer communities that practice this craft.
Olive Wood Spatula by Le Souk Olivique from Tunisia ($10)
Olive Wood Spreader by Le Souk Olivique from Tunisia ($7)
These tools are absolutely gorgeous. They’re hand-turned in Tunisia by artisans that have sought new work after the collapse of the textiles and furnitures industries in Tunisia. The beauty of the olivewood is unmistakeable.
FYI – these tools aren’t vegan and are hand-finished in a bath of mineral oil, paraffin wax, and beeswax.
The Argan Project Amlou Argan Almond Butter ($8) Made with chopped almonds and argan oil harvested by Arganams, a women’s cooperative in the small town of Amskroude in Morocco. Argan oil is rich in vitamin E and EFAs and absolutely perfect for healing dry winter skin from the inside.
It was very separated but comes back together easily. If you’re not ready to open yours, you can try storing it upside down to naturally reincorporate the oil. Don’t you dare pour it off!
This was amazingly delicious. I envisioned eating it on chocolate but you can have it with anything, or just add a dollop to toast or oatmeal. It’s much sweeter than I thought it would be and I may have gone back several times for additional scoops!
The booklet also had a recipe for almond butter pancakes. I think I may try it with a less awesome almond butter, because I cannot bear to use it in a recipe.
This box is still available until it’s sold out! The total value of this month was about $51 – I think a bit lower than normal, but I loved the usefulness of the items and am especially enamored with the deliciously chunky almond butter. As always, I love that the items support artisans around the world too. See our review of the February Globein Benefit Basket too!
