I love stretching my holiday dollars by spending my money in a smart way. One of the ways I do that – after coupons on my favorite shopping sites – is to use a rewards credit card. I use a credit card for all my purchases – I find it convenient to just pay one bill all at once and get the added protections that using a credit card provides. And when you use a credit card with an awesome rewards program you can earn points back to redeem on gift cards, travel, and merchandise!  I love earning rewards on mundane things like my power bill, my wireless bill, and on my fun purchases too like clothes for my kids or pretty things for me, and of course gifts!

One great credit card rewards program is Chase Ultimate Rewards, available to Chase Freedom, Chase Sapphire and Ink from Chase cardholders. This program makes it super easy to earn and redeem points! When you use any of these cards, you earn points on every purchase and you can redeem points for a variety of goods, experiences, or even cash. That makes Ultimate Rewards program totally custom to what you want to redeem your points for – the program gives cash back via direct deposit to cardholders starting at $20 for 2,000 points (me, I always pick cash!). Merchandise redemptions and gift cards are available at the same prices you’d pay in store without additional mark-ups – $50 is fifty dollars and it will run you 5,000 points.

Chase Ultimate Rewards can also be used for exclusive, VIP access to concerts, sporting events, movie premieres and more. (I used my Chase card just last week to obtain premium seating at a show in NYC! Thanks to my Chase Freedom card we had amazing seats!). Rewards can also be redeemed for travel on any flight, any time without blackout dates or restrictions. Rewards program dollars really add up. In the past five years or so I’ve earned about $3,000 back on my every day and my holiday purchases!  While I generally redeem my points straight back to cash, and you can do that too, lots of folks like to get a little more creative. Here are some ways to use your points and make the holidays a little merrier!

  • Travel – Redeem your points back for travel at a discounted rate for a fun one of a kind holiday gift!
  • Gift Cards for others – For some recipients (like spendthrift teens) you don’t want to give cash, so try redeeming for gift cards instead. Hint – Chase has promos during the holidays where you can redeem for discounted cards! Amazon.com is a super popular redemption choice
  • Gift Cards for yourself – Take all those points you earned all year long and redeem them for gift cards so you can finish your Christmas shopping!

As I said earlier, I prefer to redeem all my points from rewards credit card programs for cold, hard, cash – but will take that discounted gift card any day especially if it’s a store or retailer I shop at frequently. That’s better than cash!  I always take advantage of every offer that will make my spending power grow, especially during the holidays!
