Five Four Club Men’s Clothing Subscription Review & Coupon – August 2015

It’s official:  Summer is almost over — Five Four Club has started sending out sweaters and long sleeves!  Five Four Club is a men’s clothing monthly subscription club – sign up, pick a style profile and your sizes, and get clothes every month. My style profile is a “mix.”  This subscription ships at the end of the month, and it has traditionally arrived in the first few days of the next month – but this is the second month in a row that it has arrived during the month it shipped! Until recently Five Four Club was a retail brand, but now you must be a member in order to purchase clothes in their shop.

The subscription is a $60 flat monthly fee, so you receive a variable number of items each month, depending on the value of the month’s selections (months with several items usually include a tee shirt or other lower value item).  This month, I was sent two substantial and fairly high-value selections.

Five Four Albury Jacket:  this mid-weigth French terry has the classic hoodie elements — a drawstring hood, front hand warmer pockets, and elastic cuffs and waistband.  The black and white knit creates a nice, variable charcoal appearance.  The fabric has a nice drape and is very soft and comfortable, the terry loops are exposed in portions of the interior for an evener cushier feel.

The interior is partially lined with the Five Four striped fabric, but much of it is the comfy loop side of the terry.  Teal trim accentuate the color, reinforcement stitching at the drawstring openings, and along the zipper.

The clothing all has the Five Four black and white striped tag.  I noticed this tag started appearing a few months back, and now it is on all the clothing, even T-shirts.  The sweatshirt has the black and white stripe tag on the left hip and the palmetto and keys badge on the left shoulder.

Five Four Ettrick Button Down:   This shirt is really unique, but still very wearable.  The color is a soft white, with both fabrics matching precisely in color.  The main body of the shirt is a plain weave Oxford style, relatively stiff dress shirt.  It is thick dress shirt material, like a fancy napkin.  Five Four pinstripe surrounds the collar, and teal is also used to accent the rim of the collar and the collar button stitching.  

While the body of the shirt is thick cloth, the sleeves are soft and stretchy blend.  Elastic cuffs make this shirt extra comfortable and readily adaptable to to a more casual look.  A puffy fall vest would work much better with this than it would a traditional dress shirt.  A front breast pocket and hidden buttons complete the look.  I am ordinarily skeptical of experimental clothing concepts, but this piece works for me.  I think it would pair with a vest better than it would accept a tie.

I’ve been a Five Four Club subscriber for quite a while, and I like the direction the brand is heading.  They’ve reined in the street-oriented styling that once dominated, and the more sanitized styling is now beginning to flirt with contributions from designers, becoming edgier in an upscale way.  The consistent use of the tag may signal that the new styling attitude has cohered — if so, I see really great things ahead.  The latter piece in this month’s pack typifies the migration to a more adventurous blend of traditional and forward styling.
