Switch is a jewelry subscription that lets you rent designer jewelry starting at $29 a month. You can wear the pieces for as long as you like, or switch them out for new piece(s) whenever you want. Shipping is always free. The jewelry, which includes pieces by Hermes, Alexander McQueen, and Celine, among others, averages $500, and includes necklaces, bracelets, earrings, brooches, and rings. Jewelry is cleaned between wearers.

I have always admired fun statement jewelry on other women, but I can never bring myself to commit to a piece. Who wants to spend $500 on a piece of jewelry that you may wear only a few times before it goes out of fashion? But who wouldn’t like having an amazing new piece whenever you go out? Not being an heiress or a tech entrepreneur, and having a firm frugality-is-golden Midwestern upbringing, I figured that this kind of jewelry was out of reach for me. Enter Switch, which lets you have fun without the commitment. It’s like internet dating for jewelry!

Sign-up is simple. You look through the collection and pick the pieces you like. The website makes it easy to know which pieces are available. So, just like you’re shopping, you pick what you want, put them in your closet, and check out. Shipping is free both ways. Wear it as long as you like, and send it back when you’re ready for something new. I have the Black plan, which allows me to have three pieces at any one time for $69 a month.

Switch recently redesigned its packaging, and it’s all new and Switch-branded. Don’t forget to save that black shipping envelope, though — you’ll need it to send the jewelry back.

DEAL: Get half off your first month on any plan. (There is now a waitlist for new members). Use coupon code HELLOHALF.

Switch is constantly changing up its inventory, so there’s always something new and fun to select. This month, I went all-earring with some fun and varied choices.  I got the Rachel Comey Lhasa Earrings ($160 retail value), the David Yurman Infinity Stud Earrings ($495 retail value), and the Do Not Disturb Diamond Ear Crawlers ($950 retail value).

First up were the Rachel Comey Lhasa Earrings ($160 retail value).

These are super fun and unique earrings with big impact. They are silver tone with black and silver acrylic inserts. They are an impressive 3.5″ long.

You can see the RC logo on the back. These are for pierced ears, with a snap catch to hold it in place.

These earrings are really fun. The material is light as air, so you don’t feel like you have giant earrings on, plus the angled drop keeps them from swinging excessively. Obviously, you’re going to wear these out, and probably with no other impact jewelry. They’d look terrific with a bright top and leggings, or with jeans and a tee. Good strappy shoes either way. I really liked wearing these.

Next up is the David Yurman Infinity Stud Earrings ($495 retail value).

I selected these classic beauties as a contrast to the fun of those Rachel Comey danglers. The silver was a bit tarnished when they arrived, which could be easily remedied with a polish cloth, but unexpected, as usually everything is in perfect shape. As the tarnish suggests, the earrings are sterling silver, with topaz insets. They are about .5″ across.

You can see the David Yurman logo and the marking for sterling silver underneath the earring. These have clutch-back closures of a nice size–they feel very substantial and secure.

You really can’t go wrong with these beautiful earrings. You can wear them to the office, to a party, to a wedding, or any other occasion, really. They’d be a lovely piece for a college graduation gift. (Remember, you get credit toward a discounted purchase every month!)

Last is the Do Not Disturb Diamond Ear Crawlers ($950 retail value).

I so love the idea of ear crawler earrings. And these, in 14K gold with diamond chips (about a tenth of a carat), are so pretty and elegant that the contrast with the edgy style is fantastically stark. The earrings are .87″ long with hooks for pierced ears.

You can see the Do Not Disturb logo and the gold stamp on the back of the earrings. These are sparkly and just so fun.  Unfortunately for me, they didn’t sit right in my mid-ear piercing–these will be better suited to a high piercing where you can get the crawl effect. But that’s the awesome thing about Switch–I just sent these back and picked out something else.  No committment or regret. These earrings would look great on their own or with something understated to complement them.  Probably too much edge for a law firm, but you could definitely make this work in a creative-field office.

And that was our month of earrings! I really enjoyed the variety of pieces that I was able to try this month. I sent everything back for a new shipment, but if I had fallen in love with anything, I could have purchased it at a discounted price. Also, every month, I get $10 toward a future purchase. I definitely have my eye on a few things.

Overall, Switch is a really fun experience. I really like the variety of pieces available. I love the idea that I can go “shopping” for new jewelry anytime I want. Given the retail prices of the pieces (over $1500 total in this shipment!), the $29-69/month is very reasonable value. With that money, I can either buy a new piece of jewelry every 1-2 years, or I can have a new piece whenever I want. For this kind of statement jewelry that may have a shelf life of your interest or that of the fashion world’s, the economics really do weigh in favor of renting. I can’t wait to get my next Switch!
