Each shipment arrives wrapped in really cool paper! I love it!

I can tell already: February 2016’s theme was owl pellets! How exciting!

February 2016’s kit included everything you’d need to dissect one or two owl pellets! I couldn’t wait to complete this activity with my son! A couple of years ago, we saw our first owl pellet on a hike. At the time, I stepped on it loosely with my hiking boot to see what was inside. Now we really get to play. Awesome!

Each kit arrives with detailed instructions. Evidently, Stem Box sanitized the owl pellets before shipment to ensure safety. I’m intrigued!

The enclosed owl stuffed animal was adorable! My daughter ran away with it shortly after this picture was taken. My son was a bit bummed that she noticed it!

These are all of the dissection tools. Even though this activity is clearly geared toward 7-13 year old girls, my four year old son is excited to work through his first dissection!

Stem Box also included this nifty table of bones. If you can identify the bones in the owl pellet, you’ll know what the owl had eaten recently.

My son got to work dismantling the owl pellet.

He teased out as many bones from the pellet as he could. After noting that we saw a lot of hair but no feathers in the pellet, he began to inspect the bones with the enclosed magnifying glass.

One by one he compared the bones to the sheet to see if any comparisons could be made.

I helped him arrange and glue many of the bones to the enclosed black piece of paper. Interestingly, we found multiple sets of teeth in the pellet. We uncovered an intact rodent skull, which was pretty cool. We also found half of a rodent jaw that appeared to have come from another larger rodent. In addition, there appeared to be mole bones and some bones that I thought were bird bones, although I couldn’t identify them from the chart and there were no feathers in the pellet, so I may be wrong.

These were the bones that remained after gluing.

Overall, this was a super fun, fascinating box. My son and I both loved it! Although intended for 7-13 year old girls, the science in this box is awesome and would be appropriate for boys and girls alike. As this was my first month receiving this box, I can’t speak to other themes, but my son and I especially loved the outdoor animal tracking theme to this one! We can’t wait to go out and discover more owl pellets of our own. Now if only I could figure out how to sterilize them like they did for this box…
